The updated Hearing Conservation Program instruction 6055.12, issued by the DoD on November 22, 2023, underscores the importance of proper fit testing to ensure the effectiveness of hearing protection devices (HPDs).
Noise-induced hearing loss is a significant occupational hazard, particularly for service members exposed to high levels of noise. Recognizing this, the DoD has taken decisive action to confirm the effectiveness of hearing protection devices (HPDs). Through rigorous fit testing, service members and civilian employees can now ensure that their HPDs provide the optimal level of noise reduction, tailored to their individual needs.

The WAHTS (Wireless Audiometric Hearing Test System) provides both boothless clinic-quality hearing testing and HPD fit testing in one headset. The headset measures the actual noise reduction provided by the HPD while worn by the user, resulting in a personal attenuation rating (PAR).
