WAHTS Hearing & the Department of Defense: Partners in Expanding Hearing Protector Fit Testing | WAHTS

June 13, 2024
WAHTS Hearing is proud to serve as a partner with the Department of Defense (DoD) in their recent initiative to expand hearing protector fit testing for noise-exposed service members and civilian employees.

This initiative, detailed in a recent article on Health.Mil, marks a significant advancement in hearing conservation efforts within the military community. The updated Hearing Conservation Program instruction 6055.12, issued by the DoD on November 22, 2023, underscores the importance of proper fit testing to ensure the effectiveness of hearing protection devices (HPDs).

Noise-induced hearing loss is a significant occupational hazard, particularly for service members exposed to high levels of noise. Recognizing this, the DoD has taken decisive action to confirm the effectiveness of hearing protection devices (HPDs). Through rigorous fit testing, service members and civilian employees can now ensure that their HPDs provide the optimal level of noise reduction, tailored to their individual needs.

WAHTS Hearing has been at the forefront of designing and manufacturing state-of-the-art fit protector testing devices that are integral to this initiative. The WAHTS (Wireless Audiometric Hearing Test System) provides both boothless clinic-quality hearing testing and HPD fit testing in one headset.  The headset measures the actual noise reduction provided by the HPD while worn by the user, resulting in a personal attenuation rating (PAR). This testing process not only ensures the right fit but also educates the wearer on the importance of proper HPD usage.

The science behind hearing protection is continually advancing, and WAHTS Hearing is committed to leading the way to better hearing care. Our partnership with the DoD involves not just supplying equipment but also participating in ongoing research and development. Studies conducted by the Defense Health Agency Hearing Center of Excellence and other strategic partners are essential in determining more effective ways to protect the hearing health of our service members.

Our collaboration is a testament to WAHTS Hearing’s dedication to innovation and our commitment to the well-being of those who serve. As we continue to work closely with the DoD, we are honored to play a role in protecting the hearing of America’s service members and civilian workforce. Together, we are setting new standards in hearing conservation, ensuring that our protectors are well-protected in return.
